Sun Damage - What YOU Need To Know
This is information addresses the effects of UV rays on your skin. How it causes aging and why your sun care regime is of the upmost importance.
UV or Ultra Violet light is divided into three categories, according to their wavelengths from the sun to the Earth.
UVC The shortest wavelength from sun and the most damaging. These rays don't often reach the earth's surface through our protectant ozone layer but with our ozone depletion, any slight exposure to these rays casue light sunburn and prolonged exposure can be considered fatal.
UVB These rays are considered the 'tanning rays' and are most harmful when the earth is orbiting closest to the sun, therefore your summer tan that we all know and love. These rays penetrate the top layer of skin - the Epidermis, the same thickness as a silk scarf. The UVB rays stimulate our cells to create more melanin, the colouring of our skin creating a suntan, freckle, age spot and hyperpigmentations.
UVA The effects of UVA rays were not yet known when dermatologists were flaunting sun tanning beds as a healthy tanning option. These rays are the same strength all year round, no matter what orbit our Earth is in and cause more damage to the body than UVB. This light penetrates our clothing, our car windows and our hats, to name a few. This effect can be seen in our houses when furniture fades when left in the sunlight all year round. People who never knowingly expose themselves to the harmful sun's rays may notice that their hands, or chest look old and aging and wonder why. These rays penetrate us all the time. Driving the car, our hands are exposed and UVA rays will catch them! After the age of 28 years, our sun damage is not so easily repaired and it is so important to make sure of children never get burnt for this reason. Over stimulation from these rays can have you body creating too much melanin - creating a brown spot or can kill the cells, leaving a white pigmentation mark.
Natural sunlight regulates our biological clock and provides the essential vitamin D that our body needs but damage caused by these rays are not easily repared and lead to expensive, invasive procedures later in life.

Open Pores
What causes open pores? Pores are the openings of your sweat glands and are present all over your body. Pores become enlarged due to elastin and collagen damages, especially from sunlight and free radicals.
What can be done? Can my local beautician help? Although the beauty industry has succeeded in suggesting a whole range of alternatives for visibly open pores ie , facials and extractions administered by beautician, unfortunately none of them provide any more than fleeting benefit. Removing blackheads might be satisfying but only succeed in lifting out the tops of plugs which block the pores — the follicular reservoirs will re-fill themselves within a day or less. The pore can actually be damaged in the process and stretch as a result!
Self Help Natural remedies include drinking plenty of water, cleansing and exfoliation home care, along with protecting skin against UV damage.
The Manors top tips to reduce pore size! - Cleanse morning and night using a lactic acid and salicylic cleanser. This helps unblock the pores releasing the oil and preventing blockage and build up. For example our skincareRX acne scrub which has both of these ingredients in.
- A course of salicylic acid peels will also benefit the skin.
- Eat plenty of fresh fruit and leafy dark vegetables these are high in antioxidants and will protect your cells against free radical damage
- Switch to a mineral make up especially foundation. The Manors skincare rx is the best on the market wont block pores and worsen the condition. It also is certified SPF 20 and will protect against skin damage.
- Avoid touching your face! Hands are a lot dirtier than you think and can leave residue oils on the skin.
- Large blackheads can be treated more effectively with microdermabrasion ( instead of extractions which can which can damage the cell walls or even stretch them) Regular Microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin cells and gets rid of blackheads and makes your skin smoother plus it stimulates your collagen and elastin.
- Last resort?? Fraxel can really improve the skin expensive but worth it! Phone the vein and skin co 0800 new you
- Skin care high in lactic acid alpa lipoic acid and vitamine c is recommended to prevent further damage
- Come in for a skin health check with our nurse who will carry out a detailed skin assesment. We can even measure pore size.
Hair Facts and how to get rid of that unwanted hair!
Your body has a lot more hairs than you may realise and many hairs can grow on only a small patch of skin. You face holds more hairs than any other part of your body, especially the upper lip and chin so it's no wonder that that's where a lot people notice changes in the growth of their hair in these areas with the change of hormones etc. Hairs come in all forms, from light to black and some can even hold a red pigment. Hairs will also be courser on some areas of your body compared to others.
IPL is a fantastic, permanent treatment for dark pigmented hairs. Hairs are effected when they are within their growth cycle and for this reason, areas of the body take on average, a course of approximately 8 IPL sessions before the whole area is permanently treated. IPL is darer than your average waxing or shaving accessories but....
Have you ever sat down and added up how much you may be spending on hair removal? Four weekly waxes, monthly electrolysis? It all adds up. How much have YOU been spent just over the last year alone? In the long run, IPL works out far better for your permanent treatment - and your wallet!
At The Manor, our IPL clinics are run only by our Registered Nurse. She is a fully qualified IPL operator and works closely with each individual to determine the strength of pulse needed to suit the required area.
