Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels use a chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of the skin by removing its damaged outer layers. it helps improve facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation.
Alphahydroxy Acids such as Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid are the mildest of the peel formulas and perform light to medium peels. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter looking skin for people who can't spare the time to recover from a deep peel. AHA peels may be used to treat wrinkling, dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Various concentrations of an AHA may be applied weekly or at larger intervals to obtain the best results.
Betahydroxy Acids such as Salicylic Acid are also effective, particularly for acne prone skin. BHA's are lipd (oiil) soluble. This means that Salicylic Acid is able to penetrate into the pore that contains sebum and exfoliate the dead skin cells that are blocking the pore. Effective mostly for oily and combination skin.
Using AHA's and BHA's in combination achieves a full spectrum exfoliation or peel that can more effectively treat your skin type of problem.
When is an exfoliant really a peel?
I am often asked by my clients the difference between an exfoliant and the cosmeceutical range of peels we offer here at the Manor.
Because the word peel has been used loosely to cover anything from tca peel or glycolic washes in salons, the true definition of a Peel has been lost. In order to understand the difference we need to define exactly what a peel is vs an exfoliant.
Appearance medicine clinics and Medi Spas have used peels effectively to treat aging skin, acne and hyperpigmentation for decades now. However in 1996, Cosmetic Ingredient Review Board (CIR) published its findings on glycolic acid and issued recommendations for the proper use of the term, peel.
The CIR makes a distinction between “salon level” and “physician level” “salon level” refers to those products used by beauty therapists in a non-medical setting. Because of the findings in the States the term “peel” has been removed from the allowable menu of services instead using the correct terms “exfoliation” and or “resurfacing. For example our dermalogica Exfoliant Accelerator 35 and Multi Vitamin Power Exfoliant or our glycolic washes 12% 25%.
“Physician only” products and treatments carried out in medical environment are considered a peel when a 30% concentration is used and with a pH below 3.0. These are significantly more effective than the lesser concentrations with greater down time required.
At The Manor even though there are no set standards in NZ we still like to comply with regulations overseas so that is why you know when we say it’s a peel … it’s a peel!
